COURAGE

God knows the limits of our courage. However, our limitations should not be a reason for fear or hopelessness. If we allow God’s abundant grace to fill us and work its fullness in our lives, it will transform us from being fearful to become fearless.

Courage is the boldness to do the right thing, regardless of the consequences. It is a stubborn refusal to accept the power and influence of fear in one’s life.

Courage is derived from the Greek word “tharreo” which literally means boldness or confidence (refer to the following verses 2Cor. 5:6, 5:8, 7:16, Heb. 13:6, Acts 28:15, etc. – for examples)

When God says “do not fear”, He provides a reason why we should take courage. In Isaiah 41:10 God Himself promises that He will be with us and He will help us and uphold us with His righteous right hand.

To put into perspective, we know the song “He’s got the whole world in His hands”. To be able to hold the world in His hands requires strength and a really huge pair of hands (allow me to stress the fact to remind you that’s how big God’s hand is).

When the Bible says, “be of good courage”, it means be confident because God is with you. This is the courage that comes from the confidence that God’s protection and assistance is always available to every believer on the account of Christ.

Inversely, if there is good courage there is also “bad courage”. Bad courage relies on human abilities and motivation such as pride, revenge, greed, lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes, or selfish desires. It does not take into account God’s goodness, His mercy, or His loving-kindness.

THREE THINGS TO REMEMBER ABOUT COURAGE

1.Be of good courage to trust God even when things look bad. When we are thrust into the midst of situation that seems impossible to overcome, it is when God works best for our deliverance.

2.Be of good courage to trust God even in the face of intense persecution. The Christian life is not a bed of roses. We will be tested in our faith, we will be tested in our hope, we will be tested in our capacity to love God above all else.

3.Do the thing that scares you. You are stronger than you think. You can chose to act in spite of the fear that besets you. That is the only way to free yourself from fear. A single act of courage can change your perception of what it means not to be afraid.

Courage is not the absence of fear; it is the understanding that some things are worth the risks and needs to be confronted in spite of being afraid.
